Contraception and You

Sexual Health   /

HI #GYNEGIRLS AND #PREGGOS!

It’s Dr. DRAI and we’re still talking about your sexual health.  Being given sexual liberty doesn’t mean that we can squander it by being careless and unprotected. That privilege entails a lot of responsibility. This week, let’s chat about contraception.

Starting a family takes more than just the ability of one’s body to make a baby, it means being able to take care of the baby as it grows up. That is why contraceptive methods were created – to give people an option to have children when they’re ready and willing to become parents.

Birth control methods were created to prevent pregnancies by preventing ovulation from happening, preventing sperm cells from getting to an egg cell, and thickening the uterine lining to prevent implantation.  There are a variety of contraceptive options.

Here are some of the most commonly used contraceptive methods:

  • Oral contraceptive pills
  • Male condoms
  • Cervical caps
  • Intrauterine devices (IUD)
  • Spermicides
  • Tubal ligation
  • Vasectomy

Remember, most methods of contraception only prevent pregnancy, not STI’s. So, you still need to practice safe sex.

It is up to you and your doctor to determine which contraceptive option may be right for you. By all means, take the precautions necessary based on you and your partner’s specific family planning goals. Until next time #GYNEGirls and #Preggos…
