It’s me again – Dr. Drai. Your fav OBGYN! Can’t sleep … I’m up watching re-runs of Orange is the New Black. I DVR’ed it! Have you seen this show? If you haven’t, it comes on NetFlix. Anyway, the story is about Piper Chapman, a woman in her 30s who is sentenced to 15 months in prison after she is convicted of an old crime of transporting money for her drug dealing girlfriend. The offense occurred 10 years prior to the start of the series, and in that time, Chapman had moved on to a quiet, law-abiding life among New York’s upper middle class. Ladies- that’s enough plot to remind you that if things don’t add up you need to do a background check on your man or woman. The world has changed. You can’t just trust everything you hear.
One of my fav characters on the show is Mrs. Sophia Burset: a transgender woman who went to prison for credit-card fraud; she is the hairdresser for many of the inmates. Outside, she has a son named Michael with her wife, Crystal. Now, that’s a whole lot! That’s MRS. because she’s married. Mrs. Sophie is FIERCE AND is always wearing her “RED BOTTOM” slippers- Rocking couture right? LOL! Have you heard the word Transgender before? Let me give you the Medical “T” on this. Take a seat and open your mind! Ladies – there’s no time to be close-minded with this Medical “T”.
Transgender is a term used for a person whose gender is different from their sex.
You know the difference between gender and sex, right? Let me break it down. Sex is assigned to you at birth – male or female. Gender is how a person expresses themselves- masculine or feminine. There’s a mismatch in transgender people. Transgender people can be transwomen (assigned sex is male but gender is female) or transmen (assigned sex is female but gender is male). Let’s take this even further. Sexual orientation means who the person is attracted to – same sex or opposite sex. Okay, so let’s put it all together.
Mrs. Sophie is a transwoman who is attracted to women; remember she’s married to Crystal on the outside. Technically speaking… Mrs. Sophie is a lesbian.
Teaching point- you can’t assume who a transgender person is attracted to. Some can be what we consider “straight,” gay/lesbian, or bisexual. They will reveal this to you once they trust you and in time. Now you ALL get it right? Good – stop the hate! Ya’ll work my nerves with that! People don’t make choices when it comes to this – they are who they are so just accept them and get over yourself!
